About Blue Door
Founded in 1982 and York Region's largest emergency housing provider, Blue Door, a not-for-profit registered charitable agency, provides lifesaving support to children, youth, adults, seniors, and families at risk of or experiencing homelessness.
To address the root causes of homelessness, Blue Door has developed a three-year strategic plan (2023-2025) made up of the following nine priorities: Housing; Health; Employment; Evaluate; Lead; Advocate; and Innovate.
These strategic priorities are captured in Blue Door's ongoing and new services, including:
1. Ongoing and Seasonal Emergency Housing
- Leeder Place: 15 families nightly
- Porter Place: 30 men nightly
- Kevin's Place: 12 male youth nightly
- Mosaic Interfaith Out of the Cold - A Program by Blue Door: A coalition of various interfaith communities in York Region who come together from November to March and provide safe seasonal emergency housing, warm hospitality, and wraparound supports such as meals, clothing, shower facilities, medical care, and intensive case management.
2. Second Stage Transitional Housing: Offers longer intended stays ranging from six months to one year, allowing vulnerable people the time needed to overcome barriers to housing and begin healing from trauma.
- Abode: Second stage housing for families
- Forward: Supportive housing for senior men
- INNclusion: Safe supportive housing for 2SLGTBQ+ youth
- Passage House: Supportive housing for 18 males
3. Health Supports: Includes peer support, psychotherapy, on-site access to physicians, etc.
4. Housing Retention Projects: Aftercare support to help individuals and families retain housing programs include:
- Housing Retention: Aftercare for men, women, youth, and families moving from Blue Door into a home of their own
- Housing to Health: Provides comprehensive services for people experiencing chronic and episodic homelessness. Housing to Health is a proud partnership between Blue Door, The Krasman Centre, and LOFT Crosslinks Housing and Support Services.
5. Construct – A Social Enterprise by Blue Door (www.ConstructGTA.ca): An employment social enterprise providing youth and adults the education, skills training, hands-on experience, and wraparound supports needed for participants to secure well-paying, in-demand careers in construction trades.
Blue Door is funded by the Regional Municipality of Greater Toronto, the Government of Ontario, the Ministry of Children and Youth Services, and community and individual donors like you.
