About CALGARY YOUNG PEOPLE,S THEATRE SOCIETY
CYPT was founded in 1992 by Brian Dorscht and Jackie Pontin. Currently led by Executive Artistic Director Kristin Eveleigh with support from Artistic Producer Jamie Dunsdon and Artistic Associate Zoe Arthur, the organization makes it home in the West Village Theatre as one of two resident companies with Ghost River Theatre.
Productions: CYPT produces up to five theatrical productions per season ranging from classics, modern classics, contemporary and devised works, and commissioned original works or adaptations from local professional playwrights. Each production is performed by a company of young people and is supported by professional directors, designers, producers, and technicians to ensure the highest quality of experience. Additionally, young people continue to enjoy mentorship opportunities in assistant / supporting behind-the-scenes roles, such as assistant directors, assistant stage managers, etc. CYPT productions are performed at the West Village Theatre and there are occasions where productions have been performed in other venues as well. In the past our youth theatre productions have been featured around Calgary Public Libraries, in festivals and have also toured internationally.
Classes: CYPT offers a variety of classes for young people in both the north and south of Calgary, and now also in the west of the city, and in the surrounding Calgary area and there are plans for expansion into other areas. Classes are divided by age until young people finish Grade 6, and then by activity (e.g. scene study, improvisation, etc.) for those young people in Grades 7 to 12.
Camps: Each year, CYPT offers Summer Camps in both the north, south, and west of Calgary. Young People may attend one week half-day camps (ages 4 – 6), full-day camps (ages 6 – 12), two-week full-day camps (ages 10 – 17) or engage in activity specific camps (e.g. conservatory training, improvisation, stage combat, etc.).
