Founded in 1975, the Chebucto Symphony Orchestra is a musical ensemble made up of volunteer musicians from the Halifax Regional Municipality. The CSO provides a valuable opportunity for amateur musicians to perform great symphonic works, while simultaneously bringing classical music to local audiences in the Halifax region. Musicians are dues-paying members of the society, and the operations of the CSO are governed by the Board of the Chebucto Orchestral Society.
CSO membership is made up of musicians of all ages and from a wide variety of professional backgrounds. The orchestra rehearses weekly at Christ Church Dartmouth and performs up to five concerts throughout the season. Our fall, winter, and spring concerts cover a broad range of repertoire, including large classic symphonies, contemporary symphonic music, and occasionally chamber music repertoire that showcases various sections and players in the ensemble. CSO's longstanding tradition of performing Handel's Messiah "from scratch" every December is a holiday tradition for many choral singers and instrumentalists in Halifax.
