Fort Point Museum is a community museum on the LaHave River in Nova Scotia, operated by the Lunenburg County Historical Society. Established in 1972 in a former lighthouse keeper’s house, the museum is located on a National Historic Site, recognized as the first capital of New France.
The museum focuses on preserving and sharing the history of the LaHave River and surrounding communities, from Mi’kmaq presence and early Acadian settlement through to the Age of Sail and more recent local stories. This work is shared through exhibits, programs, events, and small research projects, with an emphasis on making local history accessible and relevant.
Today, Fort Point is both a heritage site and a community space. The grounds are open year-round and regularly used, while the museum operates seasonally with the support of students, volunteers, and members. As a small, community-run organization, it relies on local involvement and donations to care for the site, maintain its collections, and continue offering programming that connects people to the history and life of the LaHave region.
