In 2004, the Gandhi statue was gifted to Friends of the Canadian Museum for Human Rights (Friends) by the Government of India. The sculpture was created by renowned sculptor Mr. Ram Vanji Sutar.
The statue is located at The Forks near the Canadian Museum for Human Rights (the Museum) on a walking path between Israel Asper Way and Esplanade Riel.
A few years ago parts of the statue of Mahatma Gandhi were damaged.
Please help with repairs to and maintenance of this beloved statue through the Celebrating Gandhi fundraising event. We are grateful to have Vikas Swarup, India's High Commissioner to Canada as an Honorary Patron to the Celebrating Gandhi! event. The writer and diplomat is best known for his work Q&A, adapted in film as Slumdog Millionaire. Mr. Swarup has expressed great support for repairs to the statue of Mahatma Gandhi in Winnipeg.
Your support will help to ensure the Gandhi statue is repaired, and maintained for many years to come. The statue is an important part of the Winnipeg community.
