Green Iglu aims to strengthen food sovereignty across Canada by growing locally.
Green Iglu is a tool being used by remote and Indigenous communities to tackle food insecurity and improve community wellness by creating safe spaces for locals to mainly grow fresh food and also gather, host classrooms, and heal together. Green Iglu projects are ultimately an initiative for and by the community members.
To facilitate local food production in the most remote locations, Green Iglu required infrastructure that could withstand harsh conditions and operate as efficiently as possible. To accommodate both the diverse needs of the people and the varied landscape across Canada, we offer solutions ranging from outdoor garden beds and hoop houses, to greenhouse domes, self-contained hydroponic units and cold acre units.
The education materials Green Iglu provides covers a variety of topics including reading a seed packet, germinating, planting in a hydroponic unit, composting, and even starting a school farmers’ market! These education modules are one of the tools communities can use to involve multiple generations with their project and join the movement towards food sovereignty.
Community engagement is the key cornerstone for any project that Green Iglu works on. This community-centred approach strengthens the ownership and capability of the communities to operate and maintain their own projects, through proper training and education created in partnership with the communities.
