Empowering Science & Community: The Cape Breton Fossil Centre

The Cape Breton Fossil Centre (CBFC) is more than a museum; it is a vital community-run science and research hub dedicated to preserving the 300-million-year-old geological legacy of our Island. Operated by the Sydney Mines Community Heritage Society, a registered charity, our 5,000-square-foot facility serves as the only dedicated earth science education center in Cape Breton.

World-Class Science, Locally Rooted

Since 2003, we have grown from a volunteer-led initiative into a globally recognized institution. We house one of Canada’s largest and most significant collections of Carboniferous plant fossils, including rare type specimens donated by the late Professor Erwin Zodrow. Our impact reaches far beyond our walls:

  • Global Research: We collaborate with elite institutions like Harvard and Cambridge while supporting citizen scientists and local researchers.

  • STEM Inspiration: Through partnerships with Cape Breton University and Let’s Talk Science, we expose thousands of K-12 students annually to the wonders of geoheritage.

  • Economic Anchor: As the #1 rated attraction in Sydney Mines (TripAdvisor), we drive vital tourism traffic and spending to the Northside.

Investing in the Next Generation

We are deeply committed to social equity and youth mentorship. Our student employment program prioritizes underrepresented groups—comprising 90% of our student staff over the last four years. We believe in "paying it forward" by providing:

  • Wages well above the provincial minimum.

  • Direct mentorship that has led our alumni to prestigious international awards and internships.

  • Hands-on training in our specialized teaching lab and gallery.

Your Support Matters

Managed by a dedicated team of volunteers and students, the CBFC operates on modest grants and the generosity of our community. Your contribution ensures that we can continue to preserve Cape Breton's "Coal Age" history, support cutting-edge research, and inspire the next generation of STEM leaders.

Our 20-year track record is a testament to our capacity for high-impact, sustainable community projects. Help us keep the past alive to fuel the future.
