Choral fans are in for a treat on May 27th as Coastal Sound Youth Choir joins musical forces with Edmonton Youth Choir in Dream Things True: Music of the Imagination. Under the direction of conductors Joel Tranquilla and John Wiebe, the choirs will continue their Western Canada tour with a program that features a fantastic array of both Canadian and internationally composed choral works.
From Polynesian chant to Swedish progressive rock, and works by renowned choral composers, including Jeff Enns, Eriks Ešenvalds, Jake Runestad, and Eric Whitacre, Dream Things True is a collaborative choral experience, bringing together two of the finest youth choirs in the country. A night of creation, collaboration, friendship, and music for the whole family, Dream Things True is an example of the vibrancy and passion of youth.
Edmonton Youth Choir
Edmonton Youth Choir, the oldest choir in the Edmonton Youth & Children’s Choir family, focuses on advanced unaccompanied music and tours regularly. Quality vocal and musical instruction are key to the success of the ensemble, with the artistic director, Dr. John Wiebe and various vocal clinicians providing expert guidance. This choir has competed successfully in festivals and competitions across Canada and Europe, has been heard nationally on the CBC Radio Two network and has recorded three CDs. When not touring the choir has presented full-scale choral-orchestral works at the Winspear Centre with members of the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra and the Edmonton Youth Orchestra.
Coastal Sound Youth Choir
The Coastal Sound Youth Choir has become well-known throughout the Canadian choral community for its passionate, creative and heartfelt performances, representing the true energy and determination of Canadian youth. In 2013, Coastal Sound was awarded first place in the youth choir category at the ACCC National Competition for Amateur Choirs, and was also chosen, along with Elektra Women’s Choir, to represent Canada at the 2013 Chorus America Conference. In 2016 the Coastal Sound Youth Choir was selected as a showcase choir for Podium, Choral Canada’s national, biennial conference and festival.
“This program is all about the vibrancy and limitlessness of the imagination, the coming together of ideas. Choral singing is at its best when people connect in the spirit of sharing and collaboration.” – Joel Tranquilla, Coastal Sound Youth Choir Director
“I’m so excited to perform and tour with the Edmonton Youth Choir! It’ll be amazing to have singers coming from two different provinces, joining together to become one voice.” – Erin Taylor, Coastal Sound Youth Choir Member
