As a charitable cultural organization the mission of TIFF is to transform the way people see the world through film.
Beginning as the “Festival of Festivals" in 1976, TIFF collected the best films from other film festivals around the world and showcased them to eager audiences in Toronto. Renamed the Toronto International Film Festival in 1995, the Festival maintained its popularity through the unique combination of two parallel festivals; one for a large audience passionate about film and one for the world's press and industry.
Over the years TIFF has grown steadily by adding new and innovative initiatives including TIFF Cinematheque, the Film Reference Library, Film Circuit and TIFF Kids International Film Festival for Children which continue to reach both local and outside communities.
Our latest creative endeavour and new home, TIFF Bell Lightbox, has become a year-round cultural destination. TIFF Bell Lightbox is home to a unique blend of galleries, studios, cinemas and event spaces. TIFF populates these spaces with innovative and original programming including major exhibitions, learning programmes for youth and adults, school workshops, family drop-in activities, screenings, on stage conversations and so much more.
Through our vision to lead the world in creative and cultural discovery through the moving image TIFF aims to establish TIFF Bell Lightbox as a core part of Toronto’s cultural life, expanding audiences and offering programming that appeals to an array of demographics that are representative of the multiculturalism and diversity in the City of Toronto and Canada as a whole.
With enhanced support, TIFF will continue to uphold artistic excellence and embody its commitment to cinema through its offerings of innovative and entertaining film experiences.
