Flashy ads, memorable slogans, a culture of consumerism. This is the way of the western world. The church is to be different. In the world but not of the world; culturally relevant yet biblically faithful, not compromising on either accord. Our purpose at Calvary church is simple to state. No slick slogans or alluring alliterations are needed.
Our mission is the great commission. Two thousand years ago Jesus said to his group of rag-tag followers, fearful, under-prepared and inadequate, “All authority on heaven and earth has been given to me. Therefore, go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (Matt 28:19,20).
We haven’t been able to improve upon that. The methods change but the mission remains the same. Calvary exists to bring glory to God by making disciples of Jesus Christ. A disciple is someone who loves God in Christ, loves neighbor (Mark 12:28-32), makes disciples (Matt 28:19) and serves the world (Mark 10:42-46, John 13).
