Our mission

There are an estimated 262 million children and adolescents around the world who are out of school. More than half of them are girls, and most live in conflict-affected countries and in rural areas. Basic literacy and numeracy are the fundamental tools that will enable girls and women, as well as boys and men, to take hold of their lives and develop solutions adapted to the needs of their communities and country. Research convincingly shows that programs directed to the education of girls are more effective than virtually any other community investment in the developing world. Basic quality education provides girls with access to health and nutrition information for themselves and their family - including helping to prevent the transmission of HIV/AIDS. It provides a safe place to grow as they learn. It gives them the knowledge to provide economic support to their family.

Our objective is to support at least two major education-related projects in developing countries every year. Our aim is to reduce gender disparity in school enrolment by ensuring at least half of the students impacted by each project are girls. The Foundation also places huge importance on finding innovative solutions to the problem of out-of-school children.

About our charity

60 million girls is a Montreal-based public foundation dedicated to girls’ education in developing countries. It was established in February 2006 by a group of talented, creative and energetic women who believe strongly in the need to support education for girls in order to create a more just and balanced world. We all give of our time freely as volunteers for this passion of ours. There is no paid staff and we have gratefully benefited from free services and support from many professionals and companies, keeping our administration costs at an absolute minimum. We aim to send every penny possible to the projects we fund.
