This historic church was built in 1838 to serve the largely Acadian population in the area, replacing two previous churches from 1785 and 1812 respectively. This church served as the pro-cathedral for Bishop Bernard MacDonald for 22 years from 1837 to 1859. Bishop MacDonald was the first Island born resident to be ordained to the priesthood in 1822. The Church continues to serve parishioners with daily and weekend masses.
