Reaching Out Assisting Refugees (ROAR) is a Nanaimo, BC based association of LGBTQ & Allies which has come together to sponsor refugees. ROAR’s primary purpose is to resettle sexual and gender minority refugees to safety in Canada, specifically to the Regional District of Nanaimo. This includes private sponsorships, supporting inland refugee claimants, and may include supporting government sponsored refugees. Members are drawn from the broader LGBTQ+ community and are not necessarily Brechin United congregation members.
ROAR is currently expanding its mandate and governance, as well as hoping to raise its profile in the local and regional community it serves. Currently sponsoring 2 refugees (gay-identified men), it is also looking at sponsoring a 3rd refugee that identifies as lesbian. We are drawing in people of various backgrounds and with great asset skills to contribute to making ROAR a sustainable, long-term project.
