about

St. James the Apostle Anglican church is located in the picturesque village of Cacouna, Québec, on the south shore of the St. Lawrence River just past the city of Rivière du Loup. It is the summer church of the seasonal residents of Cacouna, Rivière-du-Loup, St. Patrice, St. Pacôme, and Kamouraska, and the last active English church between Lévis and Métis. Our congregation is stable and growing due to the welcome presence of local residents with whom we have a longstanding and special relationship.

We have integrated our property into the culture of the community.  Our property is part of a village-wide self-guided heritage tour, we host the annual "Cacouna en Concerts" concert series that showcases classical music by talented musicians from the Bas St. Laurent and beyond, we are increasingly hosting events for the Cacouna summer festival, "Festuaire," and participate in the province-wide open house weekend organized by the Conseil du patrimoine religieux du Québec (CPRQ). This year, we are celebrating the 160th anniversary of this building and the 350th anniversary of the village of Cacouna.

St. James and the parsonage, where we host clergy who officiate our Sunday services, underwent major restoration work from 2018 to 2021.  For the church, this work included a new cedar shake roof, restoration of the stained glass windows, the installation of a fire alarm system, new balconies and an accessible ramp, and restoration of the two entrance doors.  For the parsonage, a new foundation was installed, fire safety and electrical upgrades were made, balcony restoration, siding replacement and window work were all carried out.

We are contining this work in 2025-26 with the restoration of the non-stained glass windows of the church, and the foundation and buttresses as well as replacing the parsonage roof.  We have been granted funding support from the CPRQ, the Anglican Foundation of Canada, and the Drummond Foundation as well as from members of our community.  Our share of the costs are for this next stage of restoration are at least $75,000 for which we request your contribution so we can complete the task of keeping our buildings in good shape for many years to come.
