CanSerra: Canadian Society for Education in Sierra Leone is a group of Canadians and expats from Sierra Leone dedicated to providing education for children in Sierra Leone.
Since 2010, CanSerra has constructed and rebuilt numerous schools and classrooms in Mabureh Village, Kissi Town, and Kalangba in Sierra Leone. This was after the Sierra Leone Civil War (1991 – 2002) which resulted in the destruction of 1,270 schools leaving 67% of all school-age children without a school to attend. There was no education system in place for five years after the war ended.
CanSerra has recently built the CanSerra Vocational School in Kissi Town that provides training in Computer Skills, Catering, Hairdressing and Cosmetology, Tailoring, and Reproductive and Public Health. There are plans to expand the building and offer more courses including carpentry and masonry.
Our non-profit organization provides scholarships for students wishing to attend the CanSerra Vocational School or acquire a post secondary education, based on their financial situation and academic merit. We also pay teachers salaries when the government is unable to provide funds.
CanSerra is a registered charity and maintains a grass-roots approach in its dedicated work to alleviate poverty by providing education to children. To enhance the economic well being of Sierra Leone, only local workers are hired for the construction, rebuilding, and maintenance of the schools. Only local teachers are hired. All supplies are purchased from surrounding businesses. The group is run entirely by volunteers and there are no paid employees in Canada. One hundred percent of your donation goes to the cause.
Thank you for donating to our charity!
