Gakino'amaage: Teach For Canada

about

Gakino’amaage, meaning “one who teaches” in Anishinaabemowin, is an Indigenous-led non-profit that works in partnership with remote and rural First Nations to strengthen locally governed education systems. We work to recruit, prepare, support, and sustain outstanding educators.

Through both immediate teacher recruitment and long-term Nation-led pathways into the profession, we are helping to transform teaching into a driver of community strength, economic opportunity, and lifelong learning.

Since 2015, we have walked alongside 32 First Nations to recruit, prepare, and support educators who are committed to the long-term success of students and schools. First Nations lead the way—defining priorities, guiding design, and ensuring that programming reflects the strengths and visions of their communities.

First Nations students deserve the very best. We believe that every classroom should be led by an educator who affirms students’ identities, learns from local knowledge, and contributes to the excellence already present in community schools.

Together, with humility and respect, we are building a future where Nations-led education thrives for generations to come.
