Founded by Dr. Jane Goodall, the Jane Goodall Institute is a nonprofit that empowers people to make a difference for all living things.
Introduction
The Jane Goodall Institute of Canada works to protect wildlife, restore ecosystems, and empower communities through science-based, community-led conservation. Our work addresses the interconnected challenges of environmental equity, biodiversity loss, and climate change. Our work builds on Dr. Goodall’s scientific work and her humanitarian vision. Specifically, we seek to:
- Improve global understanding and treatment of great apes through research, public education and advocacy;
- Help protect great apes and their habitats by supporting community-led conservation that integrates education, sustainable livelihoods, and Traditional Ecological Knowledge;
- The Jane Goodall Institute of Canada empowers communities and youth to lead environmental stewardship and restore ecosystems, building a more just and sustainable future for all living things;
- Create a global network of young people who have learned to care deeply for their human community, for all animals and for the environment, and who will take responsible action to care for them.
History
Founded in 1977 by Dr. Jane Goodall in cooperation with Princess Genevieve di San Faustino, the Jane Goodall Institute has grown into a global conservation organization with offices in 27 countries. The Jane Goodall Institute of Canada was established in 1994, and since Dr. Goodall’s first Canadian lecture tour in 1995, they continue to scale their programs in Canada and Africa, advancing her mission through research, education, and community-led conservation.
The choices we make in the coming years will determine whether our planet moves toward healing or crosses irreversible tipping points. Guided by Dr. Jane Goodall’s lifelong belief that hope must be paired with action, the Jane Goodall Institute of Canada is committed to amplifying and scaling community-led solutions.
Hope in Action is our strategic roadmap, grounded in Jane’s insight that the communities living closest to endangered ecosystems are not just partners in conservation, but the solution. Every conservation partnership we strengthen and every young environmental leader we empower carries Jane’s philosophy forward and helps inspire millions of Canadians.
This is our path toward a future where animals, people, and the environment thrive together. The time for hope, and for action, is now.
