L’Arche Fredericton encourages community in the spirit of L'Arche with adults of diverse intellectual abilities who share life, celebrate, and grow with another. The first community of L'Arche, which translated means The Ark, was created in Trosly, France, in 1964. As of 2020, the International Federation of L'Arche has 153 communities and 21 community projects in 38 countries on 5 continents. In Canada, there are 30 L’Arche communities.
L’Arche Fredericton, originally The Willow Tree Community, was established in January 2010 and was incorporated and gained charitable status in 2013. The Willow Tree Community was approved by L'Arche Canada as a L'Arche project in December 2017 and our name change to L’Arche Fredericton followed. L’Arche Fredericton operates a community hub where members gather weekly for activities or outings. We have hired a community hub coordinator which is essential to the advancement of L'Arche in Fredericton. We are currently fundraising for a permanent location that will allow us to expand our Hub hours and offerings, with the hope that someday we will establish a L’Arche Home here in Fredericton.
