In response to Covid-19, LUSO Community Services is providing a daily Breakfast program throughout the duration of school closures . Children and youth accessing the Breakfast Program are from low income families and would have normally accessed breakfast at school. With the closure of schools, this support has been impacted. On average, we provide 600 breakfasts per week, and the numbers continue to increase each week. We are also creating Family Fun literacy kits to send home with the children accessing the program. Kits will provide children with learning resources to continue to develop their literacy and language skills, as well as provide low income families resources to enjoy at home during social distancing measures.
Additionally, LUSO operates an Emergency Cupboard for low income families. In addition to non-perishable food items, families can access baby food, diapers and hygiene items. Our food and supplies are quickly depleting with the increased need. We are in need of food, diapers, formula, hygiene items and cleaning supplies.
Many of the families accessing the emergency cupboard are newcomers and refugees to Canada and face additional challenges due to language barriers and lack of community social networks.
Thank you for your support! It will help ensure that children, youth and families have access to food and other critical items during these unprecedented times.
