Driving Canada’s transition to a prosperous, inclusive clean energy future through bold policy, research, and climate action.
The Pembina Institute is leading Canada’s transition to clean energy.
The Pembina Institute is a nationally registered climate-action charity that advocates for strong, effective policies with a multi-faceted and highly collaborative approach to support Canada’s clean energy transition.
We are Canada’s go-to source of energy expertise, providing research, analysis, and recommendations to inform policies and regulations that support communities, the economy, and the climate.
As longstanding leaders in the environmental movement, we drive change through evidence-based policy solutions toward safe, healthy and resilient communities.
We bring together thought leaders from industry, government, communities, and the environmental sector to identify common ground and move solutions forward.
The Pembina Institute has spent four decades working to reduce the environmental impacts of Canada’s energy production and to provide actionable ideas on how to implement clean energy. Today, we work on Canada’s biggest-emitting sectors across the country:
Electricity: Fewer emissions, more opportunity. Our solutions lead to clean, reliable and affordable energy sources.
Oil & Gas: The oil and gas sector is the largest source of emissions in Canada. Research, policy and regulations can change that.
Transportation: Actionable policy has the power to advance Canada’s transition to carbon-free transportation.
Buildings: Buildings in Canada should be net-zero, safe, affordable and resilient. Policies can make this happen.
Equitable Transition: A net-zero economy should extend opportunities to everyone. The future energy industry is for all.
Remote Communities: Diesel is the main fuel source used to power and heat remote communities. A transition to healthier, more reliable energy is within reach.
Carbon Removal: Carbon dioxide removal can reduce climate change impacts. We help companies understand and adopt this vital tool.
Pembina’s Vision is a world in which Canadians’ needs are met in ways that protect natural ecosystems; ensure clean air, land, and water; stop contributing to climate change; and promote a just global community.
Pembina's mission is to advance a prosperous clean energy future for Canada through credible policy solutions that support communities, the economy, and a safe climate.
The Pembina Institute relies on the support of our generous donors to advance a lower-carbon future for all Canadians. To explore ways to support us, please see our Donate page here.
Our path towards reconciliation
As Canada shifts to a clean energy economy, the transition must be fair and equitable to all people—especially Indigenous Peoples.
Our energy future needs to ensure the communities we live in are safe, healthy and resilient. That’s why we work with industry, all levels of government, and Indigenous leaders, to help envision and build a future that resonates for all.
Equity is one of our core values. As we continue to walk the path towards reconciliation, we not only want to make the world better, we want to make it better for everyone.
This colonial legacy has led to intergenerational trauma and systemic inequity— destructive impacts that continue to overpower Indigenous rights.
“As an organization, it is our responsibility to actively participate in Indigenous reconciliation—not just today—for the long-term. Our journey is rooted in fostering the right relationships and taking steps to meaningfully educate ourselves.”
