The Pembina Institute is a national environmental charity that advocates for strong, effective policies to support the transition to a prosperous and inclusive clean energy future. Producing thoughtful, evidence-based research and analysis, we engage with decision makers and stakeholders to support action on climate and energy solutions.

We work with sectors, communities and stakeholders that represent a range of perspectives yet are united in advancing climate solutions, energy security and social equity in the transition to a clean energy economy.

From corporations to local communities, key partnerships include:

Business Renewables Centre-Canada (BRC-Canada) – Launched in 2019, BRC-Canada works with industry experts to accelerate the uptake of renewable energy within the commercial and industrial sectors. BRC-Canada’s community is behind the biggest growth in corporate renewable energy deals in Canada’s history and are credited with more than $3 billion in renewable energy deals creating nearly 4,500 new jobs. Renewables in Remote Communities (RiRC) – Our policy work and collaborative relationships with remote communities supports Indigenous-led clean energy projects that replace diesel fuel and advance the right to self-determination and energy sovereignty. Women in Energy Transformation (WiET) – Working with the GLOBE Series and others, we raise profile for women leaders and facilitate knowledge sharing that businesses and government can use to address gender disparity in the energy sector. As Canada moves toward a net-zero economy, gender equity must be an essential part of Canada’s energy future.

Our policy recommendations, based on high quality research, contribute to significant advances in climate action in Canada such as:

Alberta’s push to close its last coal plant in 2023, seven years ahead of the original deadline.

New federal and provincial commitments to accelerate reductions in methane emissions, a greenhouse gas more potent than carbon dioxide, by 75% in 2030.

Canada’s commitment to cap carbon emissions produced by the oil and gas industry.

The introduction of a Canadian Clean Fuel Standard, which could be the catalyst for significant reductions in carbon emissions between now and 2030.
