This BC Initiative for Inclusive Post-Secondary Education is a family-driven organization founded to ensure that people with developmental disabilities are included as students in the academic and social life of colleges and universities of British Columbia.
The last 14 years have been a very exciting time. We have grown from supporting one student at the Emily Carr University of Art + Design to supporting students across British Columbia at the University of British Columbia at Point Grey and in the Okanagan, at the University of Victoria, Nicola Valley Institute of Technology in Merritt and Burnaby, and Simon Fraser University. We are currently in discussions with other local colleges and universities.
Founded by parents, the BC Initiative for Inclusive Post-Secondary Education (STEPS Forward) has worked in partnership with families and post-secondary for more than a decade to create ensure that people with developmental disabilities are included as students in the academic and social life of colleges and universities of British Columbia. Today adults with developmental disabilities have the opportunity to mature into adulthood alongside their peers and imagine a rich life where they are seen as valuable member of society and recognized for their contributions to their communities.
This summer we are embarking on a campaign to build a community of sustaining supporters. Together, through individual monthly donations, we hope to reach a collective goal of $2,000 in on-going monthly donations by September 2015.
Inclusive Post-Secondary Education requires a significant commitment from families in order to ensure that students have access to the same opportunities as other young adults. In order to support and sustain the commitment of families we remain committed to responding to the needs of families and students. This requires funds, above and beyond what we access for operating expenses, which can be used to:
- Support families and applicants to access generic opportunities in high school that prepare students for post-secondary.
- Provide financial support to students throughout their studies so that they can take advantage of opportunities to attend field school, out of town conferences and workshops that relate to their studies.
- Provide on-going collaboration with alumni and their families who are sustaining inclusion after university.
- Respond to requests from families to establish new initiatives with universities and colleges.
Please support the sustained efforts of families to ensure that inclusive post-secondary education is a reality across BC and consider becoming a monthly donor. Your contribution will build stronger communities that recognize the potential of ALL young adults. Join our facebook page, follow us on twitter and get the word out so that we can reach our fundraising goal and show that there is support for inclusive post-secondary education in British Columbia.
