Welcome to VIDEA’s 9th Global Solidarity Challenge!!
Are you ready for a challenge: one that will test your resilience, compassion, community networks and vigour? VIDEA is about to put your skills to the test through our annual fundraising event, the
Global Solidarity Challenge: 40th Anniversary Edition!
Over the past 40 years, the environment, education, gender equality, and human rights have been key in the fight for social justice and an end to global poverty. There have been steps forward and steps back. Global temperature has been increasing (NOAA, 2017), literacy is lowest in developing countries and higher among males than females (UNICEF, 2018), and human rights violations are still occurring every day. But investment and research into renewable energy has increased, $3.8 billion was just raised for girls’ education at the 2018 G7, and movements like #MeToo and Time’s Up are bringing awareness to sexual harassment and assault.
It’s time to celebrate and reflect on the past 40 years of progress and start acting on thechange we’d like to see in the next 40 years! Let’s challenge ourselves and promote global solidarity, starting with the
GSC 2019! We are dividing into four teams to represent four issues close to VIDEA’s heart. That’s right! We are talking about–
Connection to the Land
Food and Water
Languages
Music and Dance
For one week, we will demonstrate just what standing in solidarity can look like. It’s time to learn from our setbacks, appreciate the people who have gotten us this far, and celebrate our successes. Each team will use the Global Solidarity week to show solidarity in their own unique way and to raise funds to help support VIDEA’s education, gender, and poverty reduction programmes in Canada and overseas. Learn more about these programs at the bottom of this page, or check out VIDEA’s website for more details!
