The keepers of Flamborough’s past. We provide secure, volunteer-run archives to ensure our local heritage is never lost or forgotten.
About the Flamborough Heritage Society
Since 1973, the Flamborough Heritage Society has served as the guardian of our community’s collective memory. Based in the Waterdown library building, our volunteer-run Archives are dedicated to collecting, preserving, and sharing the documents, photographs, and stories that define the history of Flamborough and its surrounding areas.
What We Do
Our mission is to ensure that the "undiscovered" history of our region is preserved for future generations. Our volunteers contribute hundreds of hours each year to provide vital services to the public:
-
Genealogy & Research: We manage hundreds of inquiries annually, helping families trace their roots and researchers uncover the history of local landmarks, veterans, and historic events.
-
Massive Digitization: To date, our team has scanned and catalogued thousands of historical photographs, ensuring these fragile images are protected from the passage of time.
-
Community Education: We share our "Treasures from the Archives" through our newsletter, monthly speaker events on a variety of topics, and curated public displays.
The Challenge We Face
Preserving history is a specialized and ongoing process. Every donation made through CanadaHelps provides the vital resources needed to keep our doors open and our collections safe, including:
-
Archival-Grade Storage: To prevent the deterioration of 100-year-old documents and photographs, we must use acid-free boxes, specialized folders, and unique shelving.
-
Specialized Equipment: We require high-resolution scanners and modern computer hardware to continue digitizing thousands of records, ensuring they are protected against fire or water damage.
-
Operating Infrastructure: Beyond the recent $3,500 tech gap for internet and phone services, we face recurring costs for software licenses and the administrative tools required to manage a modern archive.
-
Expert Conservation: Your support allows us to maintain the aging technology used to access obsolete formats—like film or old tapes—so those "undiscovered" stories don't disappear forever.
Why Your Support Matters
We believe that we are simply the caretakers of these records—the stories actually belong to the community. Your donation ensures that when a grandchild comes looking for their family’s story 50 years from now, the records will still be there.
Thank you for helping us keep Flamborough’s history online and accessible.
