YMCA Supporting Communities Affected by Wildfires Across the Southern Interior
Providing support for firefighters, emergency personnel, evacuees, and families affected by ongoing wildfire activity.
As wildfires continue to impact communities throughout the Southern Interior, the YMCA of Southern Interior BC is working closely with local governments, Emergency Support Services (ESS), and emergency response partners to support those affected.
In Summerland, the Y has opened the doors of the Giant's Head Gymnasium to provide overnight accommodation for firefighters working on the front lines. In Penticton, Y Child Care Camps are offering spaces at no cost for First Responders who require care for their children while supporting wildfire response efforts, with remaining spaces available to evacuated families.
The YMCA is committed to ensuring that those affected by emergencies have access to safe spaces where they can rest, recharge, maintain routines, and find connection and support. For families with children, YMCA facilities can provide opportunities for play, recreation, and a sense of normalcy during a difficult and stressful time.
You can help
When emergencies strike, community support makes a meaningful difference. Donations to the YMCA's Financial Assistance Fund help ensure we can respond quickly when people need us most, providing access to essential YMCA programs, services, and facilities for individuals and families facing unexpected and overwhelming challenges.
Your generosity helps the YMCA remain ready to serve our communities during times of crisis, offering comfort, connection, and support when it matters most.
Thank you for helping us stand with our neighbours during this wildfire season.
*Donations received through this appeal will be directed first to supporting wildfire response efforts and those impacted by the current emergency. Should funds raised exceed immediate wildfire-related needs, remaining donations may be used to support other YMCA emergency response activities or child and youth development programs in the South Okanagan, helping ensure local children, youth, and families continue to have access to the supports, programs, and opportunities they need to thrive.
