A Voyage of Freedom:
The Story of Able Sail/Handi-Voile Shediac
Able Sail/Handi-Voile Shediac started as a simple act of kindness. Local skippers and volunteers wanted to share the joy of sailing with people who have disabilities. Over time, this small effort grew into something bigger. In 1989, the program expanded with the purchase of the Freedom Independence 21.
Each summer, Able Sail brings more than 300 sailing outings to Southeast New Brunswick, creating moments of adventure, confidence, and pride for people with disabilities from across the province.
This year marks an exciting period of growth as we expand our Shediac program to include at-risk youth and pilot complementary transportation for participants with mobility limitations.
We are also proud to be launching a pilot program at the newly formed Charlottetown branch this summer, extending the joy and impact of adaptive sailing to a new community. Able Sail / Handi-Voile Inc will coordinate the installation of accessible dock equipment to provide participants with physical disabilities with adaptive sailboats. We will build on the results of the pilot program to develop a full summer program with paid summer staff in 2027.
