Our Mission

ACROSS OCEANS ARTS has been deepening the ART and COMMUNITY of COLLABORATION for over 30 years. We believe all the Arts are inherently collaborative activities between artists and artists, artists and their communities, and artists and their audience. Whether a formal presentation or a casual get-together OUR GOAL is to provide an open house where all people are dancers, musicians, actors, visual artists and writers, sharing not only their work but also how they work, with each other and with their audiences. We CREATE and PRODUCE platforms for creation, performance and exchange of ideas and perspectives with live productions, exhibitions, screenings, and studio work. We RESEARCH what "collaboration" actually entails by bringing together artists with artist and public and artists to SHARE ideas through open studios, workshops, a journal of collaboration, hand-on seminars, and many varied platforms for exchange. AT THE HEART OF ALL PROJECTS ARE THESE QUESTIONS: What does arts collaboration really involve? Where do we meet and how do we meet as individuals? When do we need guidelines? What are the crossing-points of our differences and commonalities? and Ultimately: How is collaboration in art-making related to other collaborations in life? and How can we learn from one another?

Arts producer, a community animator and a research collective dedicated to the art of collaboration, AOA projects reach across generations, communities, nationalities, heritages and art forms to explore how it is that we actually manage to make and share and communicate our lives through the arts. ACROSS OCEANS ARTS produces shows, exhibitions, and festivals for contemporary arts creation in dance, music, theatre, visual and language arts and film/media. It facilitates workshops for Deep Learning. Its Community Projects bridge the divides of pro and non-pro creators. Signature programs: the Choreographic Marathon; Days of Creation; the somatic performance method "Cycles Practice", and ti~KRIMA!

Across Oceans Arts has been facilitating communication through Arts for over 30 years. We began as Phyzikal Theatre in the 1980's as investigators of performance that does not distinguish between dance, theatre, music and visuals, creating shows and education projects where human communication in all its facets was indivisible for creative self-expression. Phyzikal Theatre's dedication to what was a return to ancient ideals in art, was recognized by many awards including several Toronto Dora Mavor Moore awards and nominations. Across Oceans Arts is honoured to carry on the work that is also publicly acknowledged through international and Canadian recognitions.
