Meet J Singh
J. Singh, an internationally trained engineer with 10+ years of experience, came to Canada with dreams of building a better life for his family. However, he could not find a decent job that matched his education and experience, as expected. He had to work multiple survival jobs, spanning from retail customer service to Uber Eats to construction, just to put food on the table.
“The scale with which newcomers are being de-skilled & exploited for free/cheap labor in the guise of Canadian Experience is simply beyond comprehension. At the end, it helps nobody, neither the economy, nor all the Canadians,” he says.

The Facts You Might Not Know
J. Singh’s story is all too common. Today, too many newcomers face barriers that prevent them from contributing to our economy at their full capacity. In Calgary, 52% of recent immigrants with a university degree have worked in a job they were overqualified for – almost twice the proportion of their Canadian-born counterparts, at 28%. (Source: Immigrant Services Calgary). Like many internationally trained workers, J. Singh faces barriers such as the “Canadian experience” requirement and non-recognition of foreign credentials — systemic barriers that keep thousands from achieving their full potential.
How You Can Make a Change
This Giving Tuesday, ActionDignity is raising funds to support our Ethnocultural Grassroots Advocacy Group - a coalition of community leaders advocating for systems change that promotes equity and social justice. Your contribution amplifies the voices of workers like J. Singh, fuels grassroots advocacy for fair hiring policies, including recognition of foreign credentials and the removal of the “Canadian Experience” employment requirement.
