Agriculture in the Classroom Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) is an industry-supported initiative designed to work in partnership with Newfoundland & Labrador educators. Agriculture in the Classroom NL is intended to help NL children increase their awareness and understanding of why our food system is essential in society.

We participate in many events throughout the year such as Canadian Agriculture Literacy Month, Rooting for Health, Canada's Agriculture Day, and Trade Shows. Our Program Little Green Thumbs is in 164 classrooms across Newfoundland and has expanded every year. The Little Green Thumbs (LGT) program aims to help young people value the health of themselves, the environment and their community through active participation in a classroom garden. The grow kits, soil and seeds form an indoor garden that complement learning concepts such as where food comes from, how to grow healthy plants, sustainable food systems, community interdependence and nutrition in fun, interesting and relevant ways. Our Little Green Sprouts Program is in 63 classrooms across NL. This junior gardening program allows students to grow micro-greens right in their classroom with a smaller growing kit.

We've wiggled our way into 80 classrooms with our Vermi-composting program that teaches students about food waste and composting while allowing them to care for red wiggler worms that will produce castings for their gardens. Our programs use educational, hands-on tools that provide students with an inquiry-based experience. Students learn about the importance of knowing where their food comes from, how it is grown/produced, and why food sustainability is important for the future.
