Vision
An Alberta where people and nature thrive.
Mission
We realize our vision by recognizing gaps, mobilizing resources, investing in our communities, creating partnerships, and building capacity across sectors.
About Alberta Ecotrust
Alberta Ecotrust Foundation is a trusted leader in advancing environmental and climate solutions across Alberta. We collaborate with diverse partners from government, industry, non-profits, and Indigenous communities to create a future where both people and nature thrive. Since 1991, Alberta Ecotrust has invested millions of dollars in nearly 1,000 local projects and organizations, collectively protecting and restoring natural ecosystems, reducing emissions, and building community resilience.
Why we do what we do
We view humanity and the natural world as part of a single, interconnected system. It is a relationship of mutual dependence: healthy ecosystems support our way of life, and a thriving society provides the capacity to protect those ecosystems. When we solve human challenges and create opportunity, we are building a future where people do not prosper at the expense of nature, but where human wellbeing and natural abundance rise together.
Our work
We offer a unique suite of programs, grants, investments and strategic engagement initiatives that work together to catalyze systems change. Our focus areas are: Climate resilience and emissions reduction, nature-based solutions and conservation, and the circular economy.
Driving the transformation of Alberta's building sector: By leading programs that reduce the environmental impact of buildings, establish better building practices and improve the well-being of their occupants.
- Emissions-Neutral Building Information Exchange (ENBIX)
- Getting to Zero Research Project
- Retrofit Accelerator
Protecting and restoring our watersheds: Through the coordination of advocacy efforts and the capacity-building work of the Alberta Coalition for Watershed Security.
Enabled local climate projects: By funding local initiatives and providing millions of dollars through our grants, Alberta Ecotrust has directly supported projects that have resulted in measurable reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, protected the environment, and strengthened community resilience in Alberta.
Scaled urban climate solutions: Through our impact investing, we have invested millions in scalable, innovative climate solutions in Calgary and Edmonton. This funding has attracted additional investment, demonstrating the scalability of these solutions and sparking similar initiatives in other Canadian cities.
Cultivate partnerships and knowledge exchange: We foster partnerships with government bodies, businesses, non-governmental organizations, and communities to facilitate connections and encourage insight exchange. Through events like our Environmental Gathering, we strive to create a vibrant and interconnected network of change-makers working towards a sustainable future. We also actively share knowledge and insights from our projects and initiatives, and our publications, reports, and case studies provide valuable information on environmental best practices, innovative approaches and success stories.
