The Old Peace River Trail is a historic wilderness trail and is part of the northern Arctic land route of the Trans Canada Trail. The Old Peace River Trail and adjacent Athabasca River were historically core corridors by foot, horse and canoe for First Nations people. Early Euro-Canadian explorers, traders, settlers and gold seekers followed these routes. The Trail is now used by many northern Alberta residents as a multi-use outdoor recreation opportunity and by those interested in exploring the lush natural terrain that the area offers.
The Moose Portage Bridge is an essential crossing along the Old Peace River Trail. Heavy 2020 spring and early summer rainfall in Alberta caused excess water build up and drainage that damaged the channel banks, washed out the bridge approaches, and damaged the bridge. The bridge has partially collapsed and is stuck in an unstable position in its current location.
The is no safe crossing for trail users near the site of the bridge until the necessary repairs are complete. A portion of the trail will remain closed until a solution is found.
Funds are urgently needed to lift the bridge out of its unstable position and to start the repair process.
