Our Mission

The Alcuin Society is a voluntary, non-profit association of people who care about the past, present and future of books. Founded in 1965 by Geoff Spencer, the Society is a registered charity in Canada dedicated to the entire range of interests related to books and reading. These interests include literary authorship, book publishing, book design and production, bookselling, book buying and collecting, printing, binding, papermaking, calligraphy and illustration. Each year the Society holds the competition for The Alcuin Society Awards for Excellence in Book Design in Canada. The winners are exhibited across Canada as well as in Tokyo, Leipzig and Frankfurt, where they compete internationally. The Journal of the Society is Amphora which is published three times a year and the Society also publishes occasional publications on the book arts and keepsakes.The Society sponsors free public events and lectures. The patron of the Society is her excellency, the Governor General, Michaelle Jean.
