In order to continue education beyond grade 5, students from Karang must move to Kathmandu where they can attend a Tibetan high school. It is a 7 day walk from their home near the Tibetan border to the nearest roadhead, and then a week of local buses. They will live in a hostel for five years before they return home – it is too costly for them to return earlier.
Altitude Project is the primary sponsor of Karang Primary School, and we also support the hostel for the school's young graduates. A community hostel maintains their connection with their village and with their Tibetan culture. It becomes their family until they graduate grade 10, it provides a support network in the unfamiliar world of a city of 1.4 million. The hostel is small, it currently houses 13 children, in grades 7-9. We are expecting an additional 8 students this winter, all girls by the way. Our expected maximum capacity is 30 students. It is managed by a university student from Karang. He does a terrific job. A cook lives in and helps with facility maintenance. The operating costs include building rent, electricity, all school costs; enrollment at the Kailash Bodhi Secondary Boarding School, books, uniforms etc., and staff salaries.
Total cost estimate for one year is $10,000 US. We are actively searching for funding partners for the future.
