In order to continue education beyond grade 5, students from Karang must move to Kathmandu where they can attend a Tibetan high school. It is a 9 day walk from their home near the Tibetan border to the nearest roadhead, and then a week of local buses. They will live in a hostel for five years before they return home – it is too costly for them to return earlier.
Altitude Project is the primary sponsor of Karang Primary School, and is working to secure funding for a hostel for its grade 5 graduates. A community hostel maintains their connection with their village and with their Tibetan culture. It becomes their family until they graduate grade 10, it helps them safe in a support network in the unfamiliar world of an enormous city. The hostel is managed by a university student from Karang. A cook lives in and helps with facility maintenance. The operating costs include building rent, electricity, all school costs; enrollment, books, uniforms etc., and staff salaries. For this first year, some costs for furnishings are required. The hostel is modest but functional. We have visited it twice.
Total cost estimate for one year is $10,000 US. For 2019, the Nepali government provided a grant of $5,000 US equivalent. Our hope is to raise the remaining $5,000 through this campaign so that the hostel can function through 2019. We are actively searching for funding partners for the future.
