The Association des francophones des Kootenays Ouest (or AFKO, translated as the Francophone Association of West Kootenays) was founded in 1986. AFKO promote the French language and culture in the West Kootenays region through diverse cultural, educational and recreational activities.

The AFKO is a not-for-profit membership organisation which offers a variety of French-language services, among them a book and video library, weekly radio show, quarterly newsletter, summer day camp, travelling library (bibliobus), French-language directory of services, language courses, and assisted public access to computers and the internet. The AFKO also organizes a variety of events celebrating French culture and open to all Francophones and Francophiles in the region.

Our services

Méli-Mélo – radio show The French community radio show in the West Kootenay region! It is produced at the Kootenay Co-op radio for over 15 years. Tune in for the show on Friday at 10 am and on Sunday at 10 am for a repeat. 93.5 FM in Nelson, 96.5 FM in Crawford Bay, 101.5 FM in Castlegar, and 107 FM in New Denver.

The quarterly bulletin “La Voix des Kootenays” The West Kootenay French Association publishes a news bulletin four times a year at the start of each season: “La Voix des Kootenays” (the Voice of the Kootenays). You can obtain a copy by visiting our office in Nelson. You can also access it online under Publications on our Website.

The bookmobile The bookmobile is a mobile library service running twice a year, in April and in October in several towns in the West Kootenays including Rossland, New Denver, Winlaw, Kaslo, and Revelstoke. In each town that the bookmobile visits, volunteers organize the gathering. If you are a member of the West Kootenay French Association (AFKO), you can borrow items, as well as purchase maple products while making some new French-speaking friends!

The on-site Library (books, reference material, VHS/DVDs, and CDs) The library is located in the facilities of the AFKO in Nelson at 723 Ward Street. Come and visit us to check out over 4, 000 books and movies!

Monthly Happy Hour Every third Wednesday of the month from 5pm to 7pm is French Wedensday at the Royal on Baker, Nelson. , French-speakers and lovers of the French language gather to eat tasty food and chat! Kids are welcome.

Annual sugar shack The sugar shack takes place in April at the Salmo Ski Hill. More than 150 people participate in this yearly event where traditional food is served (Ham, beans, eggs, crepes, and maple taffy on snow) and where everyone can enjoy good music and sing along.

Annual Saint-Jean-Baptiste This event takes place around  June 24th at the Kokanee Creek Park campground outside of Nelson. The party starts at 04:00 pm with activities for both adults and youths. A meal is shared, and the night ends with all the participants singing around the bonfire. It is also possible to stay overnight.

Summer camp In July and August, a day camp is offered for children between the ages of 6 and 10 years old. Every year, the program is filled with fun, dynamic and diverse activities.

Annual Corn roast This event  take place in Revelstoke in September. Everybody brings a dish to complement the boiled corn that has just been picked. The party is filled with music and games for both youths and adults.

Annual Christmas party In December, the AFKO celebrates Christmas. In a day event, Santa Claus visits after everybody sits and eats the delicious traditional holiday meal. Outside games and talent show.

Annual Culture Days

In September, AFKO offer a bilingual art expo with live music and art workshop. Everyone welcome!

Annual Paris in Nelson

A fun and uplifting event. French market where live accordion, French bistro, French artist and artisans, kids corner fill up the Hart Hall in Nelson before the winter school break. Don’t miss it.
