AFKO West Kootenays francophone Association has for mission to promote French culture and language throughout the region.
The West Kootenay Francophone Association, AFKO, was founded in 1986. AFKO promote the French language and culture in the West Kootenays region through diverse cultural, educational and recreational activities.
The AFKO is a not-for-profit membership organisation which offers a variety of French-language services, among them a book and video library, weekly radio show, mensual newsletter, summer day camp, French-language directory of services, language courses, art workshops, print screen studio. The AFKO also organizes a variety of events celebrating French culture and open to all Francophones and Francophiles in the region.
Our services
Méli-Mélo – radio show The French community radio show in the West Kootenay region! It is produced at the Kootenay Co-op radio for over 15 years. Tune in for the show on Friday at 10 am and on Sunday at 10 am for a repeat. 93.5 FM in Nelson, 96.5 FM in Crawford Bay, 101.5 FM in Castlegar, and 107 FM in New Denver.
We also have a podcast FRANCOUEST. Seasons 1 and 2 features francophones and francophiles from the West Kootenays who stand out for their talent and determination. Available on all listening platforms.
The on-site Library (books, reference material, DVDs, and CDs) The library is located in the facilities of the AFKO in Nelson at 807 Baker St. Come and visit us to check out over 4, 000 books and movies!

Community centre: AFKO aims to provide a space for the French-speaking community of the West Kootenays to gather, read, watch a movie, chat, etc, while having tea, coffee or Kombucha by donation. Printing services is available for cheap.

Activities
Monthly Happy Hour In the fall, every third Wednesday of the month from 5pm to 7pm is French Wedensday at the Royal on Baker, Nelson. French-speakers and lovers of the French language gather to eat tasty food and chat! Kids are welcome.
Annual sugar shack The sugar shack takes place in April at Salmo Ski Hill. More than 150 people participate in this yearly event where traditional food is served (Ham, beans, eggs, crepes, and maple taffy on snow) and where everyone can enjoy good music and sing along.
Annual FrancoFête This event takes place around June 24th at the Lakeside park in Nelson. The party starts at 04:00 pm with activities for both adults and youths. Francophone music is played and the night ends with trained DJ's.
Summer camp In July and August, a day camp is offered for children between the ages of 6 and 10 years old. Every year, the program is filled with fun, dynamic and diverse activities.
Annual end-of-the year celebration In December, the AFKO celebrates family, community, winter, warmth, traditional tales. Outside games and talent show.
Annual Culture Days
In September, AFKO offer a bilingual art expo with live music and art workshop. Everyone welcome!
