Our organization supports deaf and hard-of-hearing children and their families, living in British Columbia from birth until they head off to school. But what happens once they head to school? Supports for these children can differ greatly depending on which school they attend and where they live in the province. At BC Family Hearing Resource Centre, we believe that preparing children and their parents for this transition from Early Intervention to the school system is one of the most important tasks we can undertake.
Our PEER Kindergarten Readiness program is offered to all our families, free of charge to ensure that they feel ready and confident to take that next big step to Kindergarten. The PEER program begins the whole year prior to Kindergarten entry: parents participate in evening workshops monthly from September through April. Then in May, parents and their school-bound kids, join us at our Main Surrey Centre for a 3-day event. Moms and dads will hear from expert panels, network and learn while their children participate in a classroom setting getting them ready to navigate a Kindergarten classroom as a deaf or hard-of-hearing individual.
We know the value of this program because parents come back to us year after year, even when their children are no longer little, to tell us how valuable it was for them during their child's educational journey. Every year PEER grows in popularity and scope - and so we are asking for your help to ensure that we can continue to grow along with the demand. Help us fund this important and crucial program for all our wonderful families.
