The Bach Elgar Choir is Hamilton's renowned concert choir and a leader in Canadian choral music since 1905.
The Bach Elgar Choir is one of Canada's longest running arts institutions and is Hamilton's renowned concert choir. Founded in 1905 by Bruce Carey as The Elgar Choir, the Choir gave its first concert in February 1905. Merging with the Hamilton Bach Choir in 1946, the ensemble has been a vital part of Hamilton’s musical life for over 120 years.
In recent years, with Artistic Director Alexander Cann, Bach Elgar has had a special focus on music for St. Cecilia's Day, has helped establish the regional Three Choir Festival, and has developed three innovative programmes integrating film and live performance.
In 2023-24, Bach Elgar produced a three-city tour of Space Journey, an original film project. The Bach Elgar Choir proudly champions Canadian music and artists, recently performing Stephen Chatman's Magnificat and soon to be presenting Charles Demuynck's Der Golem. Appearing often with the Hamilton Philharmonic Orchestra and employing national vocal talent, the Bach Elgar Choir is proud to be an intrinsic part of Hamilton's musical and social life.
The belief that music brings people together, that it uplifts spirits, and that it strengthens a community has carried the Choir through decades of change, countless performances, and generations of singers and audiences.
Your support helps ensure that this legacy - built by thousands of voices across Hamilton's history - continues to grow. It sustains our concerts, nurtures local talent, and keeps the tradition of choral excellence alive for all who find meaning and inspiration in our music, and for this we are sincerely grateful.
