A Renewed Vision: Building on a Legacy
Thirty-plus years ago was founded to support Barbadian immigrants and foster cultural, social, and educational initiatives. The vision was clear: to establish a community centre where Caribbean Canadians could gather, share ideas, and build a stronger future together.
Overcoming Challenges, Creating Impact
Despite initial success including a $2 million funding approval to build the centre political shifts rescinded the funds, forcing the organization to pivot. Barbados House became a key player in employment programs, youth tutoring, and international outreach, equipping schools in Barbados with computers and donating medical equipment to hospitals. Scholarships were also established to support Barbadian heritage students.
A New Era: Donald Moore Community Services Inc.
Recognizing the need for renewal, the organization rebranded as Donald Moore Community Services Inc. (DMCSI), expanding its reach beyond Barbados to serve the broader Caribbean community. The name honours Donald Moore, a champion of immigration reform who helped open doors for Black Caribbean immigrants in Canada.
Since 2013, DMCSI has hosted the annual Donald Moore Appreciation Brunch, celebrating outstanding Caribbean leaders. The organization is also focused on attracting new members and leadership to drive its mission forward.
Expanding Our Reach: Supporting Seniors & Cybersecurity Awareness
DMCSI is committed to addressing the evolving needs of the community, with a strong focus on senior programming, cybersecurity awareness, and community development. We offer workshops and resources to help seniors navigate technology safely, reducing the risk of cyber threats while enhancing digital literacy. Our community development initiatives foster social connections and economic opportunities, ensuring all generations benefit from a supportive and inclusive environment.
Join Us in Shaping the Future
The renewed vision remains: to create a space where Afro-Caribbean Canadians can connect, support one another, and thrive. But we cannot do it alone. With your support, we can build on Donald Moore’s legacy, strengthen our programs, and finally realize the dream of a dedicated community space.
