BEDEQUE AREA HISTORICAL SOCIETY (BAHS) Inc. 2010
The Bedeque Area Historical Museum, on Prince Edward Island, displays a large collection of artifacts relating to the social history of the Bedeque area, with exhibits on Callbecks Store (the Museum is housed in the old Callbecks building, the hub of the area from 1899 to 1991); on the Borden ferry service, which ran from 1917 to 1997; and on the culture of the Mi’kmaq.
However, a principal aim is to tell the story of the Loyalist settlement on P.E.I. in 1784, and especially that of the Bedeque Bay area. We aim to commemorate those Loyalist families who settled around what was then called Bedeque Harbour, including the names Anderson, Darby, Green, Hooper, Lefurgey, Linkletter, MacFarlane, Murray, Schurman, Silliker, Small, Strang, Waugh and Wright. Our Loyalist exhibit displays maps showing where particular families settled and our ultimate aim is to tell the story of each of the families
A MAN WHO CARED
During the Second World War Howard Clark served his country aboard the hospital ship Lady Nelson, which sailed out of Halifax. Howard attended to injured members of our armed forces as they were transported across the Atlantic and home to Canada.Howard made seventeen crossings of the Atlantic. His service to his country came to an end in 1946.
Upon his return to civilian life, Howard fished Island waters and worked at carpentry. He had a passion for collecting memorabilia and his vast collection became known as The Red Barn Museum. Howard loved to give personalized tours.
Age has a way of changing things and increasingly Howard's work of passion was in jepordy of being lost. The Bedeque Area Historical Society was created under legal charter to help address this concern. A quiet and unassuming man has entrusted his large collection to the care of others. The Society wishes to enlist your help!
