Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland

about

All girls have limitless potential.  Your donation could be the spark that allows a girl to fulfill hers.

Why Give to Big Sisters?

Your donation is an investment that allows us to provide supportive mentoring relationships to youth who may be facing challenges like bullying, isolation, poverty, abuse, social anxiety, low self-esteem, and more. Mentoring is no longer a nice to have service, but a necessity in helping youth navigate an increasingly complex world.  With one in ten youth in the Lower Mainland believing they don't have a single adult that cares for them, we aim to create relationships which empower youth by matching them with a caring adult mentor.

We believe that changing the course of young lives can, in turn, change our community’s future. Our focus is on prevention, not intervention.  These local actions support the global movement around empowering women and girls. Your financial support allows us to continue to serve over 850 youth each year.

Your donations help us make and sustain life-long and life-changing relationships between Bigs and Littles,—and instantly makes you a part of a movement empowering girls to reach a potential they never knew was possible.

About Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland

Since 1960, Big Sisters BCLM has been changing the course of young girls’ lives. Our experienced caseworkers carefully match Little Sisters with female adult mentors who help them reach their full potential, avoid risky behaviour and make healthy choices.

Research shows that mentoring has a powerful impact on the lives of young girls. We know that 96 percent of adults who had a mentor as a child say they are happy and 92 percent feel confident.

Mentoring helps create safer schools and communities. Girls who have a positive mentor are less likely to engage in destructive behaviour such as bullying, fighting, binge drinking, drug use or dropping out of school.

Serving the Greater Vancouver area, we are an accredited member agency of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada, with solid commitments to mentoring and child safety.

We offer three mentoring programs

Big Sisters is a one-to-one mentorship that has a profound impact on Little Sisters. Through regular outings, a relationship is developed between the mentor and the Little Sister that is built on trust and common interests, and is supported by our experienced caseworkers. The result is a life-changing experience for both the volunteer mentor and Little Sister.

Study Buddy is a weekly one-to-one mentoring relationship that focuses on school work. Little Sisters in this program not only improve their academics but also report a higher level of self-esteem.

Go Girls! is an eight-week group mentoring program for girls aged 11 to 14 that promotes the benefit of an active, healthy lifestyle. With social pressures to be perfect at an all-time high, girls in this program build the tools for confidence and self-awareness during these formative years.
