Birdsong: David Martin New Music Foundation is a nonprofit National Canadian Charity dedicated to improving the lives of people with mental illness in Canada. Our message and mission is to help, inform and inspire Canadians through new music, small local community concerts, promotions and awareness campaigns to change our existing belief system around those with mental illness.

Birdsong helps musicians who live with mental illness get their music and message out to the world.

The Foundation has a grant program with the vision to creatively change the stigma attached to the diagnosis of mental illness, and change the way our society speaks about people living with mental illness.  The Foundation invites songwriters and musicians in any genre who have been diagnosed as living with mental illness to submit their work. Three people will be selected by the board to receive grants that will help them record, publish and market their music. The songwriters retain the copyrights.

BIRDSONG – David Martin New Music Foundation was founded to commemorate the spirit and memory of musician John David Martin-Konopacki (September 8, 1987-September 24, 2017), who died at the age of 30 due to mental illness, exacerbated by the lack of treatment options in Canada. 

His short, beautiful and creative life is the inspiration for BIRDSONG. The foundation was established to help others like David whose greatest passion in life was creating personal music and performing and recording it for the world — even while daily battling with a debilitating mental illness.

People struggling with mental illness are often shamed, discriminated against, and do not share their situation for fear of being stigmatized, losing independence and often jobs as well as friends. BIRDSONG New Music Foundation creates healing through the process of production and performance of original material created by these incredible individuals.

We create hope, and MUSIC is our method of communication for change and empowerment!
