Our Mission
Founded by the non-profit society Tomorrow Collective Arts Society, Brief Encounters is an interdisciplinary performance residency that is all about collaborative research, creation and performance.
About Brief Encounters
Based in Vancouver, over the past 12 years we’ve supported 308 artists in the production of 153 new collaborations, over 21 volumes and 10 special editions.
Our latest project - BE Gastown - will transform four blocks of Vancouver’s favourite neighbourhood shut down to traffic, and over 30 artists creating 20 independent hidden gems, what will you discover?
BE Gastown is a free 2-evening event that highlights Gastown’s position in the historical and cultural centre of Vancouver.
From sunset to 10:00pm on September 21 + 22, BE Gastown will embed 20 shows in unusual places throughout the neighbourhood, like local businesses and the nooks and crannies we walk past without a second thought. Working with design firms, architects, fashion designers and filmmakers to realize the event’s vision, BE Gastown captures the sense of place by disrupting our day-to-day interpretation of Gastown’s spaces.
The event will engage audiences via live performance, immersive installations, multimedia projections and beyond.
