Our Mission

The broad purposes of the British Columbia Law Institute are to promote the clarification and simplification of the law and its adaptation to modern social needs, promote improvement of the administration of justice and respect for the rule of law, and promote and carry out scholarly legal research.

The objectives of the Canadian Centre for Elder Law (a division of BCLI) are to enrich and to inform the lives of older people in their relationship with the law; to meet the increasing need for education and research in relation to legal issues having particular significance for older people and to serve as a national focal point for this emerging field.

About BRITISH COLUMBIA LAW INSTITUTE

The British Columbia Law Institute was created in January 1997 by incorporation under the Provincial Society Act. It is the effective successor to the British Columbia Law Reform Commission which ceased operations that year. BCLI carries out scholarly research, writing and analysis for law reform, collaborating with government and other entities, and providing materials and support for outreach and public information.

In 2003 BCLI created the Canadian Centre for Elder Law (CCEL) as a vehicle to carry forward its work in relation to legal issues affecting seniors. CCEL is a response to the need in Canada for a body that has a dedicated focus on this area to facilitate the development of Elder Law as a coherent body of knowledge.
