Our Mission
The mission of BCSARA is to represent and support the recognized un-paid professional volunteer ground search and rescue community in BC by providing advocacy, funding disbursement, health and safety programs, access to information as well as public outdoor education and injury prevention.
About British Columbia Search and Rescue Association
In any given year group search and rescue (GSAR) groups in BC respond to more than 2000 incidents involving approx. 2,100 missing (lost) or injured persons. The 3000+ unpaid professional volunteers, located in 78 BC communities are available day or night, 24/7, 365 days a year.
Together, these men and women donate a total of 400,000 hours of their time on responses, training and administration annually. An astounding 95% of subjects were found or rescued within the first 24 hours of a volunteer GSAR group being activated.
This volunteer service offers tremendous value for citizens and visitors to BC alike. The cost to replace this volunteer service in direct salary dollars alone would exceed $12 million annually (excluding infrastructure and capital costs, which are estimated at over $50 million dollars). BCSARA is proud of its role in making this service one of the best in the country and a model for others.
