If someone you loved faced a significant disability from a serious accident, a birth anomaly, or a degenerative disease, what kind of home would you want them to have? For the people who live in Nigel House, they get the care and support they need to live with dignity and independence. But the building itself is old and beyond repair. With your help, we can give Nigel House a new home.
Simply put, Nigel House is beyond its useful life.
"The people living at Nigel House are just regular, ordinary people that had something happen ouside their control and they're trying to make the best of it. The better the place that they're living, the better the chance of living a better life," Avril, Mother of Nigel House resident, Ava.
Ava grew up in Vancouver where she had an active life with lots of friends, she had a job, was mobile and highly independent. One day, her mother heard her collapse in the next room, and doctors eventually diagnosed her with Multiple Sclerosis. She was 21.
While Ava lived with her mother for a number of years, her MS progressed, and she needed more care than her mother could provide. Eventually they found Nigel House, a care home appropriate for somebody Ava’s age, with people of all ages and disability levels.
“When Eva came here to Nigel House, I think we're both a lot happier, it felt right.,” said Ava. "It changed her world. She’s now living as fully as she can, inspiring those around her, and has a renewed sense of purpose and joy."
Nigel House is so important. It’s a home for adults that can give them the care and support they need, along with programs and activities that are fun, engaging and relevant to people from their 20s through 50s. Nigel House supports people’s independence and helps each person make each moment matter; the staff help the people who live at Nigel House be part of the community.
Through the New Home for Nigel House Campaign, Broadmead Care has been working with key partners to build a new $40 million care home for Nigel House residents. The existing 26-bed building was built in the 1970’s, is beyond its useful life and presents many challenges.
The new Nigel House will be a beautiful space designed to help people live as fully as they can, within their abilities. It will include 41 private rooms, a spacious dining room and reception area, and purpose-built rooms including a therapy gym, hair salon, coffee shop and rooftop garden. The building will also include 37 assisted-living spaces for lower income seniors and 10 affordable housing units.
