Since 1990, Brown Bagging for Calgary’s Kids (BB4CK) has fed hungry kids in Calgary. Our lunch programs address food scarcity issues and support all kids in need. If a child is facing problems accessing an adequate, healthy lunch we make sure they are fed. It's that simple.
With the cancellation of classes across our city, kids who access lunch through their school will no longer have this access. Many parents who need to work just to make ends meet will now be forced to stay home, restricting their already limited resources. Kids who accessed free school lunch programs have now lost a vital nutrition lifeline. For these kids, these free lunches made up all or part of their daily nutrition.
In response to the pandemic and the cancellation of classes across the province, BB4CK has made a significant shift in our program delivery model.
We are doing everything we can to ensure that the thousands of kids who depend on a free BB4CK lunch - for what may be their only meal - continue to have access. Our current strategy is to reach families by providing grocery gift cards to them directly, so they can purchase the food they need to care for their kids at home.
We have also relaunched our FoodFinderYYC initiative (foodfinderyyc.com) as a way of connecting kids to food resources in their community. Families can simply access the website for a quick map and breakdown of what is available, at what location, during which hours, etc. or they can text “FOOD” to 587-318-0232 and it will direct them to the closest location.
Your support of our Response Fund will ensure families can provide for their kids and that kids see no interruption in the lunches they rely so much on each day. Help ensure hungry kids are fed through these times of uncertainty.
