Building Assets is a global non-profit volunteer organization that develops viable solutions to reduce and mitigate conflict and the resulting dependencies by working to create self-reliant communities. We help local communities in Myanmar ( Burma ) affected by conflict transform their lives through education. We work with local partners by listening to their immediate and long-term needs and aspirations, providing viable solutions with a focus on gender equality, justice and peace.
Conflict so often destroys the right to education and in so doing increases the likelihood of poverty, social division and contributes to increased inequality. Over 40% of out-of-school children live in conflict- affected countries. More concerning, a girl living in a conflict-affected area is 90 % more likely to be out of secondary school than her counterparts living in areas without unrest. Building Assets works with local partners to provide safe and peaceful environments for young orphaned girl children to study affected by conflict beyond primary school. By providing a safe environment from primary to high school young girl children are less vulnerable to trafficking, sexual violence, being conscripting into the military or forced into early and unsafe marriages.
We believe that by contributing to their education by improving access through building schools, improving the quality of education through teacher training, vocational skills training and policy intervention, and by providing the psychosocial support we can improve student learning outcomes through gender-based programming. Although conflict continues unabated in many parts of Burma, there is the urgent need to help stop the cycle. By providing access to education for these young girls at an early stage we can lay the foundation for a brighter future for the country, and begin to prepare these young students to be the country’s next future leaders.
