About WILDER INSTITUTE/CALGARY ZOO
The Calgary Zoological Society was officially founded in 1929, making it one of the oldest charities in Alberta. Today, the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo is home to over 4,000 animals across more than 100 species, and every visit supports critical conservation work to fight the extinction of plants and animals locally and globally.
For more than 30 years, the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo has been a leading authority in wildlife conservation, reintroducing threatened species to the wild and empowering communities to conserve natural resources to positively impact both the environment and local inhabitants. The Calgary Zoo is also proud to be recognized as an accredited institution through the Association of Zoos and Aquariums.
While our work is global, our roots run deep in the Albertan conservation community. Sitting on 125 acres in the heart of the city, we operate a not-for-profit charitable wildlife conservation organization that works to fight the extinction of plants and animals worldwide. In addition to the zoo, we proudly operate the Archibald Biodiversity Centre (ABC), Canada's largest conservation breeding and research facility.
The Wilder Institute oversees the Calgary Zoo's conservation portfolio locally and globally, with a vision to be Canada's leader in wildlife conservation. Our conservation programs span 15 initiatives across six countries. From releasing head-started burrowing owls in Alberta to protecting one of the last remaining hippo populations in Ghana. Conservation projects also include work for species-at-risk in the US, Kenya, and Nigeria.
The Wilder Institute is a leading authority on wildlife conservation, reintroducing threatened species to the wild and empowering communities to conserve their own natural resources to positively impact both nature and people, collaborating with local and global partners to develop science-based solutions.
