Enhancing Accessibility, Transforming Lives

Whether on our climbing wall, in the forest, around a campfire, or building a solar-powered car, outdoor experiences build confidence, independence, and lifelong connections to nature. Research shows they improve self-esteem, reduce anxiety, and foster belonging. One teacher shared how two boys with low confidence climbed to the top of our wall and rang the bell—an experience that changed what they believed was possible.

These moments depend on access. Inaccessible washrooms can prevent participation entirely. Starting March 15, we are redesigning the washrooms in Rotary Hall, our central gathering space. The redesigned washrooms will include high contrast finishes for safe navigation, touchless fixtures, motion-activated lighting, accessible supports and grab bars, adult change tables, and sufficient space for caregivers and personal support workers. Braille signage, visual and audible indicators, and sensory-conscious design will support individuals with diverse mobility, sensory, and cognitive needs. This will ensure that everyone, elders, families, and visitors of all abilities, can fully participate in the joy and connection that nature offers.

By addressing these physical barriers, the project strengthens equitable access to nature-based learning, intergenerational programming, and community connection—ensuring that every visitor can participate fully and confidently in the Camp Kawartha experience.

HELP US TRANSFORM LIVES: Our accessible washroom renovation is supported by generous grants from the Ministry for Seniors and Accessibility Enhancing Access to Spaces for Everyone (EASE), AON Inc. and the generosity of private donors like yourselves! While these donations help to cover some of the cost, we still need your help. If Camp Kawartha has ever made a difference in your life or in the life of someone you love, we invite you to join us in building a space where everyone belongs.

Together we will inspire environmental leaders and stewards of all ages through dynamic, accessible, year-round outdoor programming and powerful partnerships to create meaningful change.
