We work towards equality by bringing healthcare and education to underserved communities in Canada and India.
Canada India Education Society works towards equality and inclusion through healthcare and education for underserved communities in Canada and India. Its hallmark projects include partnering with a charitable hospital, nursing school and primary and secondary school in Dhahan Kaleran, Punjab, India. In Canada, it forms partnerships with education-based organizations to serve local and international groups, who are underprivileged.
Its programs create learning and work opportunities, especially for rural young women in India. The organization works to transform lives and build sustainable communities.
Its past projects have also included overseas healthcare outreach, overseas village infrastructure improvement projects, exchange programs between Canada and India, plus Indigenous program support at a local, B.C. high school (L.A. Matheson Secondary School).
Its international literacy project, The Dhahan Prize, awards $45,000 yearly to the best in new Punjabi fiction. The Dhahan Prize is the richest literary prize among South Asia’s indigenous languages. It receives submissions from authors around the world, including Canada, India, Pakistan, the United Kingdom, the United States and Australia.
The Dhahan Youth Award recognizes 8 Canadian students in British Columbia yearly for their short story writing in Punjabi, which they translate into English. Their works are published in an anthology called Lofty Heights. It is translated into French. An additional two Indigenous youth write stories that Punjabi language students translate into Punjabi. This is a way to build alliances among cultures, and further emphasize a commitment to Truth and Reconciliation as a community organization.
