Our Mission

To lead in the national effort to reduce accidental deaths and injuries.  The Canada Safety Council serves as a credible and reliable resource for safety information, education, training and awareness.

About CANADA SAFETY COUNCIL

The Canada Safety Council is an independent, knowledge-based, charitable organization dedicated to educating Canadians on the importance of safety in public and private places.  The CSC provides national leadership in safety with information and through education and collaboration.  The CSC has been a voice and resource for safety in Canada for more than 100 years.

As a not-for-profit, non-government organization, the CSC draws upon the dedication and commitment of its directors, committee members and instructor community to fulfill its mandate and objectives.  Contributions from donations enable a small professional staff to maintain and deliver safety programs and to respond to inquiries from the public, professionals, the media and others.

CANADA SAFETY COUNCIL Programs

The Canada Safety Council promotes safety through national training programs and safety awareness materials.  Programs are delivered either online or through a large network of CSC certified instructors across Canada and materials are made available through the CSC directly.  Please visit our website or read below for more information.

1. Vehicle Safety Programs

Motorcycle Safety

Motorcycle Safety Training through the Gearing Up Program is delivered in person and is Canada’s only national motorcycle rider training program. The Gearing Up program has a long standing established reputation both in Canada and internationally for its excellence in course curriculum and professional delivery where students learn the skills of defensive riding.

Driver Safety

The Canada Safety Council believes that safety on roads starts with defensive driving.  The CSC offers several recognized driver training programs.  The Defensive Driving course (DDC) and Professional Driver Improvement (PDIC) that are delivered across Canada by a network of CSC certified Instructors.  The 55 Alive course is designed to sharpen driver skills in seniors. Driving and its impact on the environment and more globally, climate change, prompted the creation of the Green Defensive Driving Course (GDDC).  This online course delivers important driver safety information while introducing opportunities to  reduce impact on the environment.

Off-Road Safety

Off-Road Vehicle use continues to grow both in recreational use and on the job site.  The CSC Off-Road Training Programs include, ATV, UTV, Snowmobile and ARGO Training. Participants are taught safe operation in varying conditions, defensive riding handling and environmental awareness.  CSC Off-Road courses are the only full day courses recognized by occupational health and safety organizations for workplace certification.

2. Youth Safety Programs

Elmer the Safety Elephant

The role of Elmer the Safety Elephant is to teach young school aged children how to stay safe.  From the day Elmer first appeared over 60 years ago, he was an instant hit with children to thousands of children in schools across Canada.  Elmer remains a constant reminder of the importance of traffic and pedestrian safety, and more recently mental health in awareness of bullying in schools, and managing personal safety and wellbeing in times of pandemic.

Home Alone Training Course

The Home Alone Program is designed to provide children 10 years of age and older with the necessary skills and knowledge to be safe and responsible when home alone for short periods of time.

Babysitter Training Course

The Babysitters Training Course is one of Canada Safety Council’s longest running programs.  The course is an ideal community project, which can help prevent injuries and promote the responsible management of common situations that may arise while children are under the care of babysitters.

3. Occupational Health and Safety

Maintaining safe practices and preventing injuries of all types while at work carries great significance to workers and their families.  Educational courses on critical occupational health and safety topics are a must have to improve awareness in today’s active and rapidly evolving world of work. The CSC offers a large catalogue of online courses for safety in the workplace, as well as at home, on the road, and for youth safety.

4. Community Safety

The CSC runs National Safety Campaigns on a wide range of community related topics.  The campaigns are designed to educate and bring awareness to important safety topics and issues that Canadians are dealing with in their daily lives.  Examples include seniors safety, fire safety, home safety, water safety, school safety and much more.
